Various stages of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a terrible disease that has high latency periods. To explain further, latency period means the duration of the exposure to the causative agent and the beginning of the disease. Causative agent in the case of this disease is asbestos. The manifestation of signs of the disease is high after exposure to asbestos. Sometimes, this can be even after 20-50 years.

Another notorious symptoms of the disease is that it has characteristics that are very similar to other benign diseases. Many times pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) is confused with pneumonia has led to dire consequences. What happens is that the patient is the last stage before they even realize they have the killer disease. Therefore, little to do to help the last stages of cancer.

Certain treatments have been devised for mesothelioma. However, this only helps to reduce pain symptoms. Normally you can not spread the disease to be checked. There is no known cure for this disease. The choice of treatment for mesothelioma patients is based on the level of mesothelioma that he or she is in.

Mesothelioma Stages

Butman System

The Butman system is used to define a staging system mesothelioma. Whole basis of this system is the extent to which the tumor has spread. The various stages of mesothelioma on the basis of this system are as follows:

Stage I: At this stage, the presence of mesothelioma is on the right or left pleura (lungs). It may also be in the pericardium, or diaphragm. Diaphragm is the muscle that separates the chest and abdomen. At this stage, mesothelioma is only one side (left or right) of the pleura.

Stage II: At this stage mesothelioma, the disease spreads to the other side of pleural or esophageal or cardiac or chest wall, or even lymphoma.

Stage III: This phase of the disease is really depends on the stage. It spreads from the peritoneal diaphragm. Peritoneum towards the abdominal cavity lining. While the first phase, the mode of the chest lymph nodes to join. This stage may involve the lymph nodes in the chest too.

Stage IV: This is the final stage of terrible mesothelioma whose disease is spreading to other organs through the bloodstream.

TNM staging system

The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) has developed another new staging system. This TNM staging system is very similar to that used for other cancers. In this system, T stands for tumor

N stands for the attack on the lymph nodes and M stands for Metabar.

The staging system is based on the following: § the size of the tumor and the extent to which it has spread to nearby organs § extent of spread to lymph § extent of spread to distant organs.

The various stages of mesothelioma as the TNM staging system are as follows:

Stage I: The mesothelioma can be in the right or left pleura. It may also have attacked the pericardium, or diaphragm on the same side. However, it would not have spread to lymph nodes.

Stage II: The disease could have spread to the lungs, diaphragm, pericardium, or lymph nodes on the same side.

Stage III: This phase is mesothelioma may have spread to the muscles of the chest wall, ribs, esophagus, heart and other organs on the same side. It may also have spread further into the lymph nodes on the same side.

Stage IV: In this phase, mesothelioma affect the lymph modes in the chest on the same side or may start to spread to the lungs or pleura on one side. Also, if mesothelioma is found in distant organs or if it spreads to organs in the abdomen and chest (with blood), it is the fourth stage.

Although the TNM system is clear and comprehensive, yet Butchart system is commonly used to describe the stages of mesothelioma. Whatever the staging system is used, it is important to understand that mesothelioma stage lighting is important to determine what kind of treatment to be used on patients.

How is mesothelioma levels determined?

CAT scans, MRI tests and other tests such as x-rays help determine the stage of mesothelioma patients. After this, the doctor informed the patient and his family on board and the type of treatment needed. Mesothelioma has no known cure. So, the doctor can only offer to reduce symptoms, to reduce pain and provide psychological support.
